McKenzie Cohen

A graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the intentions and qualifications to pursue a career in the medical field, McKenzie Byrd Cohen moved to Memphis as a corps member with Teach for America in 2007. Her experience in an urban secondary mathematics classroom proved to be more meaningful than she ever could have imagined. What she was originally seeking in medicine – meaningful, life-saving work – she found in a classroom. She believes that God has specifically called her to Memphis to serve in the ministry of education.
After committing to a life in education, Mrs. Cohen joined the staff at The Collegiate School of Memphis in 2010 as the Director of Academic Achievement. In 2012, she received her Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Christian Brothers University and was named Principal & Dean of Academics at Collegiate for the 2013-2014 school year. She and LeRone Cohen were married in the summer of 2013 and love enjoying all that Memphis has to offer together.

After a search that extended nationally, it became very evident to the Collegiate Board of Directors that our best candidate to become our new Head of School was one of our own. Mrs. Cohen has a deep knowledge of and commitment to our school, its students and families, and the Board is supremely confident that she will continue to build upon the excellent work currently taking place at Collegiate. As a part of the Collegiate Leadership Team, Mrs. Cohen has been a great contributor to the early success of the school. Collegiate is already providing the academic rigor and character development necessary for our students to be successful in college and in life, and under Mrs. Cohen’s leadership we fully expect even greater days ahead.

Mrs. Cohen is tremendously humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to serve as the Head of School beginning in Summer 2014. She recognizes and appreciates the support from the Board of Directors as well as the faculty and staff of Collegiate.
